German Drinking and Beer Garden Songs: 14 All-time Favorites (2000) || LISTEN
REVIEW: The reason why German albums sold in North America are so often compilations of beer-drinking songs such as this compilation of 14 all-time favorites from the Bavarian Beer Singers is that drinking beer is very important in Germany. Not because the beer is so good, indeed a good reason per se, but because it is a venue to socialize and enjoy the company of other people. All Germans know most if not all of these songs by heart--from "Trink, Trink, Brüderlein Trink" to "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit"--and they can evoke homesickness or nostalgia. The liner notes give these instructions "How to enjoy this album": Pour yourself a stein of beer.  Turn on the compact disc.  Sit down in a comfortable chair, take a sip of beer, close your eyes, and visualize the scene. They've got it almost right--this is really music to sing with other people, so after you pour your beer and put the CD on--sit down with a good friend or a few to enjoy. ~ Review by Erik Macki

Oktoberfest: At the County Fair (1998) | LISTEN
REVIEW: Anyone who has lived in a city with a large German population -- whether it's Munich, Berlin or Hamburg or Chicago, New York or Philadelphia -- is well aware of Oktoberfest. An annual festival celebrating German culture, Oktoberfest is a tradition in both European and American cities. The music of choice at Oktoberfest is polka, which is what the band Oktoberfest embraces on the entirely instrumental At the Country Fair. Those who have attended Oktoberfest gatherings should be quite familiar with "Sine Cura," "Der Froliche Wandersmann," "Zum Volksfest" and other traditional German polka songs heard on this CD. Unfortunately, the liner notes are poor -- it would have been nice to read about the history behind "Es War Einmol Ein Creuer Husar," "Schwarze Amsel" or "Die Lustigen Hannoveraner." Many world music releases boast comprehensive liner notes, and At the Country Fair is certainly deserving of that. The music itself, however, is as enjoyable and uplifting as it is exuberant. ~ Review by Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Oktoberfest & Beer

BOOK: Prost! The Story of German Beer, by Horst Dornbusch, 162 p. (1998) |

DESCRIPTION: Nowhere has the history of beer been so intimately intertwined with the political, religious, and cultural history of the land and its people as in Germany. The book traces the 3,000-year-old story of German beer from its turbid beginnings among tribal bands in the forests to the crisp, clean gems we drink today. The subtle secrets of German beer are revealed. Readers will find out what makes it special and sets it apart and learn why Germany is arguably the greatest beer culture in the world. They will examine the ingredients that go into authentic German beers and follow the processes that make these beers.

"Prost! is perhaps the only work in English that details how the political, economic, and social history of Germany are inextricably linked to its brewing history and culture. . . . Finally, there is an accurate, comprehensive overview of the history of beer and brewing in Germany that obviates the need to pore over volumes of dry history books, each of which may contain as little as one or two relevant bits about brewing." ~ From the Foreword by Eric Warner, Owner of Tabernash Brewing Company.
