Latinos are the fastest growing
ethnic group in the United
States. It is estimated that by
mid-century, they will comprise
about one-fourth of the country's population.
The image of the American
cowboy as we know him today
would not be the same without
the contributions of Hispanic
immigrants. The cowboy hat,
boots, lassoes, chaps, spurs,
saddle, cattle, rodeos, ranches,
and even the horse were first
brought to the North America
by Spanish settlers.

The guitar was invented in
Andalucía, Spain in the 1790s,
when a 6th string was added
to the Arab lute.
It was in part the hatred
of the indigenous peoples of
Mexico for the gods of the
ruling tribe, the Aztecs,
that allowed the Spanish to
convert natives to Catholicism.
Today 90% of Hispanics
are Catholic.
The potato is native to
South America. Today it
is a staple food in several
countries around the world.
