Bolero | Cumbia | Flamenco | Latin Jazz | Latin Pop | Latin Rap / Hip Hop | Mambo Mariachi | Merengue | Ranchera | Rock en Español | Rumba | Salsa | Tango | Tejano / TexMex ABOUT LATIN RAP & HIP HOP Hip hip music began in the late 1980s in Spain and in the early 1990s in Mexico under the influence of American rap. The Mexican movement was propelled by the influence of US-Latin performers and led to a new rap-rock style. However, Mexican rap remains largely an underground phenomenon. Spain likewise has no popular hip hop movement, though the style is flourishing in other European countries. While some of the artists listed below sing primarily in English, they are listed here because they are Hispanic in origin and their music is influenced by Latin musical traditions. CD REVIEW: If a case can be made for gangsta rap, Cypress
Hill is the act to make it. The trio of L.A. Latinos has the commercial
clout and its raps are mercifully free of the misogyny, homophobia,
and anti-Asian, anti-Jewish racism that so often mars the genre. Member/producer
D.J. Muggs creates an eerily lean soundscape of whining sirens, off-kilter
funk rhythms, metallic percussion, nasal taunts, and gruff warnings
that's the aural equivalent of today's nerve-rattling cop flicks and
mob movies. ~ Review by Geoffrey HimesCD Los grandes exitos en español [1999] LISTEN

CD REVIEW: Originally banned in Mexico and slapped with a
lawsuit in Spain, Molotov, a foul-mouthed rap en español
group based in Mexico City, is as fired up as Rage Against the Machine
on its debut. The album's title, which translates as "Where Will
the Little Girls Play?" parodies ¿Dónde Jugaran
los Niños? (Where Will the Children Play?), a 1992 album
by Maná, one of rock en español's biggest acts.
But that's just the beginning. Rapping in both Spanish and English,
the band puts together an explosive blend of turntable scratches, thick
bass lines, and flamenco guitar riffs. Initially misinterpreted as a
slur against homosexuals, "Puto (Coward)" actually makes fun
of anyone not willing to stand up for himself. With its chanted lyrics
and anti-authority theme, "Gimme Tha Power" is an anthem for
disenfranchised people everywhere. Think of Molotov's Dónde
as Mexico City's answer to Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions
to Hold Us Back. -- Review by Jeff Niesel CD Dance and Dense Denso [2003] LISTEN

CD REVIEW: Multiculti Los Angeles-based 10-piece Ozomatli
is more than the sum of their parts: hip-hop, salsa, and funk crash
head-on in this surprisingly natural collaboration. Their self-titled
debut makes Ozomatli sound like one of the world's great live shows--a
party band with a brain--and they pull it off deftly. Rapper Chali 2na
("Charlie Tuna," get it?) has an authoritative voice and a
way with words, mixing references from Edie Brickell to Ed McMahon;
just he and the Cut Chemist (both of Jurassic 5), who lends his turntable
skills to the proceedings, would make for an entertaining album. But
it's the way that the two--when they're even featured--build on and
blend into the grooves of the wah-pedal-and-brass-section-powered ensemble
that sets Ozomatli apart. Danceable and engaging, they've made a promising
debut. -- Review by Randy Silver CD Don't Mess With the Dragon [2007] LISTEN
