CD A corazón abierto [2004] • LISTEN • BUY CD • REVIEW: Ranchera heartthrob Alejandro Fernández polishes up his sound on A Corazón Abierto, his first pop album since 2000's Entre Tus Brazos. That effort was marred by Emilio Estefan's bland production and repetitive instrumentation, but Fernández diversifies on Corazón, enlisting the help of Aureo Baqueiro (Sin Bandera, Aleks Syntek) and Kike Santander, producer of choice for a dazzling roster of artists, including Thalia, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, and David Bisbal. They wrap Fernández's swoon-inducing voice in lush instrumentation, veering from somber ballads ("Para Vivir," "Me Dedique a Perderte") to galloping uptempo tracks ("Se Va," "Canta Corazon"). Fernández's mariachi sensibilities have often been muzzled during his pop-flavored outings, but the flamenco-guitar flourishes and blaring horns actually seem to play up his trademark sound and style. It makes for a confident collection that cleverly straddles both genres and makes the most of Fernández's sexy--and often thrilling--voice. -- Review by Joey Guerra

CD Celebracion de los 25 años de Juan Gabriel en bellas artes [1998] • LISTEN • BUY CD • REVIEW: In the '90s singer Juan Gabriel emerged as Mexico's finest living songwriter of the folkloric genre, specifically, the ranchera. The ultimate master is still the late José Alfredo Jimenez. Here Gabriel delivers another two-CD set of his live performances, very similar to his 1990 En el Palacio de Bellas Artes. The differences: six fewer songs and fewer of his earlier hits like "Hasta Que Te Conoci." Still Gabriel manages to connect with his irrepressible charm and a great cast that includes top string and horn players. Repeat-button faves include his classic "Costumbres" and, of course, his "Amor Eterno," perhaps the most eloquent ode to a lost love. "Amor Eterno" has been covered handsomely by the likes of Rocio Durcal and Vicente Fernández, and in Gabriel's hands here, it is transformed into a solemn prayer. -- Review by Ramiro Burr

CD Románticas de Pedro Infante [1996] • LISTEN • BUY CD • REVIEW: Jorge Negrete may have been Mexico's first cinematic ranchera hero, but perhaps because of his premature death in 1953, Pedro Infante surpassed him in the number of hit movies and recordings. And like that of Negrete, Infante's fantastic recording output has been constantly released in new compilations. This collection has most of his signature hits, including "Cien Años," a heartbreak tune about being abandoned, and "Paloma Querida," an old standard reinvented by Infante when he sings with cool detachment about love's inspiration. Infante was untrained, his approach was simple but emotive, yet he was talented enough to make unforgettable such other classics as Agustin Lara's "Mujer" and "Amor de Mis Amores," and the uplifting bolero "Amor a la Distancia." Infante died in a plane crash in 1957 but is immortalized in his movies and music. -- Review by Ramiro Burr
