Rooted in conjunto and norteño music, Tejano also borrows freely from other contemporary musical traditions such as rock, pop, jazz, R&N, country, and blues. It has in recent years been transformed from a local, ethnic musical form to a genre with wide appeal across the Americas and beyond. CD REVIEW: Ranchera heartthrob Alejandro Fernández
polishes up his sound on A Corazón Abierto, his first
pop album since 2000's Entre Tus Brazos. That effort was marred
by Emilio Estefan's bland production and repetitive instrumentation,
but Fernández diversifies on Corazón, enlisting
the help of Aureo Baqueiro (Sin Bandera, Aleks Syntek) and Kike Santander,
producer of choice for a dazzling roster of artists, including Thalia,
Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, and David Bisbal. They wrap Fernández's
swoon-inducing voice in lush instrumentation, veering from somber ballads
("Para Vivir," "Me Dedique a Perderte") to galloping
uptempo tracks ("Se Va," "Canta Corazon"). Fernández's
mariachi sensibilities have often been muzzled during his pop-flavored
outings, but the flamenco-guitar flourishes and blaring horns actually
seem to play up his trademark sound and style. It makes for a confident
collection that cleverly straddles both genres and makes the most of
Fernández's sexy--and often thrilling--voice. -- Review by

Disc One is a 14-track collection of all new songs featuring more of Intocable's strengths--hooky melodies, tight instrumentation and vocal harmonies--evident on "Aire," the first single, and "Soledad." The group injects folk rock rhythms on "Tiempo," a tune about sensing the end in a relationship, and "Es Alguien Mas," on the fear of wasting time with the wrong person. Other keepers are "Ahora Que Te Perdi," a mellow norteño ballad which stands out for its lyrics on the importance of honesty. The narrator regrets his mistake when he songs "No supe valorarte" ("I Didn't Know How To Appreciate You"). The second CD features 11 Intocable tunes recorded by a variety of top artists. Ranchera singer Pepe Aguilar sings "Fuerte no Soy," electronica/rock act Kinky does "Coqueta," reggaeton singer Tego Calderon and rapper DJ Kane offer "En Paz Descanse," and Volovan takes on "Ya Ves." -- Review by Ramiro Burr CD Crossroads: Cruce de Caminos [2006] LISTEN

CD REVIEW: Glorious vocals and impeccable production make
Mexico en la Piel one of the best moments in superstar Luis Miguel's
already-illustrious career. The album of mariachi classics is superb
from start to finish, thanks in large part to the accompaniment of Mariachi
Vargas de Tecalitlán. Miguel's previous albums of bolero classics
were polished, if predictably safe, affairs. His albums of original
tunes (Aries, Amarte es un Placer, 33) were less
successful, often relying on dated arrangements that made him sound
hopelessly out of touch with modern music. Mexico en la Piel,
however, is a revelation. It honors past musical traditions via smart,
classy song selections and still bristles with immediacy and edge. Miguel's
immense success could have easily found him resting on his laurels.
Instead, he has delivered an often-thrilling collection that should
appease old and new fans of any age. - Review by Joey Guerra
