ABOUT GERMAN MUSIC
Over the centuries, German-speaking musicians and composers
have made substantial contributions to music. Well-known are the early
musical geniuses Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Alongside the development
of classical music reigns a
long tradition of popular folk music
in German-speaking regions, which still remains strong today.
In the 1920s, musical developments in the United States began to influence
modern German
music, and later in the century, German musicians also began to
take notice of developments in Great Britain. In the 1970s, the German
band The Scorpions appeared on the international music scene with their
English-language rock and heavy metal songs. Then in the 1980s the German
Neue Deutsche Welle movement thrust a number of German singers
onto the international music charts: Falco with "Der Kommissar"
and "Rock Me Amadeus", Trio with "Da Da Da", Peter
Schilling with "Major Tom", and Nena with her hit "99
Luftballoons". In the 1990s, the German band Rammstein became popular
among heavy metal enthusiasts around the world.
Several German artists are now making a name internationally in a variety
of genres. The once widely accepted notion that English lyrics were
a prerequisite for success is increasingly being abandoned in favor
of producing songs with native German-language texts. The new term Deutschrock
and up-and-coming bands like Glashaus, Juli, and Silbermond are evidence
of the expanding place of German in the contemporary
music scene.
In our German music pages, you can find out more about the bands and
singers popular in German-speaking Europe and beyond. You will also
