Spanish Language Films
Hispanic Actors & Actresses
All of the performers below are of Latin descent. While
most of them started out making Spanish language films, many were discovered
by Hollywood and subsequently began working in English language films.
We therefore include a mixture of their original Spanish and original
English films below. For Spanish-language movies, English titles are
also provided.
Antonio Banderas
(Spain, b. 1960)
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Born in Andalucía, Spain, José Antonio Domínguez
Bandera dreamt of being a professional soccer player until he broke
his foot at age 14. He studied drama and worked with the National
Theater of Spain, where he caught the eye of acclaimed Spanish director
Pedro Almodóvar. Through his series of films with Almodóvar
between 1982 and 1990, his popularity spread. Mujeres ...
and Atame!, introduced Banderas to American audiences. Despite
his poor English skills, he made his Hollywood debut in The Mambo
Kings in 1992. Due to his undeniable screen presence and Latin
good looks, a string of supporting roles followed. His first US starring
role came in Robert Rodriguez's Desperado in 1995. He worked
in 6 different films that year, a pace that he could not possibly
maintain. Nonetheless, his prolific cinematic output contines to astonish.
In 2005, Banderas received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Javier
Bardem (Spain, b. 1969)
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Born in the Canary Islands, Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem comes
from a family of filmmakers. As a teenager he appeared in several
television series, though he was not committed to an acting career
intially. He studied painting and then played for the Spanish national
rugby team before making his big screen debut in Las edades de
Lulú (The Ages of Lulu) in 1990. The international hit
Jamón, Jamón (A Tale of Ham and Passion)
followed. His apprehension about being typecast as a womanizing stud
led him to deliberately choose much different characters to play in
the years that followed and he gained recognition for his ability
to transform himself to successfully play diverse roles. His breakthrough
performance came in 2000 with Before Night Falls, for which
he garnered several awards as well as Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.
For his 2004 performance in the Oscar-winning film Mar adentro
(The Sea Inside), he took home a Golden Globe Award. He has
also received the 1996, 2003 and 2005 Spanish Goya Awards for Best
Actor.

Demián
Bichir (Mexico, b. 1963)
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Demián Bichir Nájera was born in Mexico City into a
family that seems to have acting in its genes. Both mother and father
as well as two brothers are also actors. Bichir started his career
in television soap operas at the age of 14 and won occasional roles
in American, Mexican, and Spanish films. During the 1990, he increasingly
took on starring movie roles and gained much attention in 1999 when
the comedy Sexo, pudor y lágrimas (Sex, Shame &
Tears), in which he also played the lead role, became the most
successful box-office hit in the history of Mexican cinema.

Penélope
Cruz (Spain, b. 1974)
ABOUT THE ACTRESS
Penélope Cruz Sánchez started dancing at an early age,
receiving several years of instruction in classical ballet, dance
performance, and jazz dance. She dropped out of school at age 15 when
she beat out 300 other competitors in a talent agency audition. The
numerous roles in television shows and music videos that she subsequently
secured served as a springboard for a film career. Her first major
films were Jamón, Jamón (A Tale of Ham and
Passion) and the even more successful Belle epoque (The
Age of Beauty), which took home the Academy Award for Best Foreign
Film as well as several Goya Awards.
In the succeeding years, her resume of on-screen acting experience
grew, as she played lead roles in more award-winning Spanish films,
including Carne trémula (Live Flesh) and Abre
tus ojos (Open Your Eyes). To expand her career opportunities,
she accepted some English-language roles in British film and television.
As for so many Spanish actors, however, it would be her work with
famed director Pedro Almódovar that would provide a welcome
boost to her international success. Following her performance in Todo
sobre mi madre (All About My Mother) Cruz was suddenly
in great demand as an actress in both Spanish and American films.
She has starred opposite Hollywood leading men Johnny Depp, Matt Damon,
Nicolas Cage, and Tom Cruise -- an impressive array by any standards.
She is close friends with fellow Latina actress Salma Hayek.

Fernando
Fernán Gómez (Argentina/Spain, b. 1921)
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Born in South America when his actress mother was on tour, Fernando
Fernán Gómez returned with his family to Spain in 1924.
Following the Spanish Civil War, he gave up his university studies
in law to pursue a career on the stage. He formed his own theater
company, and directed and wrote scripts in addition to acting. In
the 1940s, he began working in cinema as well. He directed his first
feature film in 1952. He is especially known for his roles in comedies,
but has also worked in dramatic roles. He has acted in over 170 films,
the bulk of which were recorded during the Franco era, though he picked
up Goya Awards for Best Actor in 1987 and 1999 and the 1993 Goya for
Best Supporting Actor. Fernán Gómez is also a respected
author of poetry and novels, has worked on television, radio, and
in opera. His diverse artistic talents have won him an essential place
in the panorama of Spanish culture and cultural history.
Though Fernán Gómez made numerous films, just those
of the last decades are listed here; older ones are just very difficult
to come by.

Gael
García Bernal (Mexico, b. 1978)
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Perhaps not surprising for a child whose parents are already in the
business, Gael García Bernal began acting at a very early age.
He appeared with them in a variety of plays and made appearances in
short films. By the time he was a teenager, he was Mexico's soap opera
heartthrob. The teen temporarily left his successful career behind
to study acting in London. He returned home to shoot his first major
feature film, Amores perros, which hit the theaters in 2000.
The movie, which won many accolades including a nomination for the
Best Foreign Film Oscar, brought the young actor international attention.
Though offered big-budget roles outside of Mexico, García Bernal
opted to continue working in the profession closer to his roots. The
choice seemed validated as he appeared in lead roles in hit film after
hit film, including Y tu mamá también (And
Your Mother Too), which was nominated for the Best Original Screenplay
Oscar, El crimen del padre Amaro (The Crime of Father Amaro),
which received both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Foreign
Film, and Diarios de motocicleta (The Motorcycle Diaries),
which was likewise nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign
Film. He also played the lead in noted Spanish director Pedro Almódovar's
La mala educación (Bad Education), which also
took home several nominations and awards in 2004. García Bernal
has made a name for himself as one of Mexico's premier young actors.

Salma
Hayek (Mexico, b. 1966)
ABOUT THE ACTRESS
Salma Hayek, daughter of a Mexican mother and Lebanese father, wanted
to become an actress from a very early age. She gave up her university
studies in international relations to fulfill her dream of acting.
She first became a star at home playing the title role in the Mexican
soap opera "Teresa" (1989), but soon left for Hollywood
to more broadly explore her career potential. After receiving only
bit parts in stereotyped Latin roles and improving her English skills,
she got her break when director Robert Rodríguez cast her opposite
Antonio Banderas in Desperado in 1995. Audiences were starstruck
by the pair, and during the remainder of the decade, Hayek worked
in a variety of roles. Her beauty and star status won her cosmetics
contracts with Revlon, and later with Avon, and twice landed her on
People Magazine's annual list of the world's most beautiful 50 people.
Though the commerical Hollywood movies brought her the success she
had always dreamt of, Hayek was eager to be part of independent and
artistic films in which she felt she could stretch her acting ability.
For her title role in Frida, she became the second Latin actress
to ever be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar. In 2003, she worked
again with director Rodríguez in the third film of his Mexico
trilogy and in a cameo in his Spy Kids 3-D movie. As one of
Hollywood's most recognized and highest paid Latin actresses, she
continues to capture interesting roles that showcase her talent.

Fele
Martínez (Spain, b. 1975)
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Rafael "Fele" Martínez studied theater in Madrid,
where he created the Sex-Peare Theater troupe with a group of friends
and fellow students. He gained experience in acting and directing
theater before turning his attention to film acting. For his supporting
role in Tesis (Thesis) -- his very first feature performance
-- he was awarded the Goya for Best New Actor. His subsequent work
with noted Spanish directors Pedro Almodóvar and Alejandro
Amenábar, in such acclaimed films as Abre los ojos (Open
Your Eyes) and Hable con ella (Talk to Her), have
made him a familiar on-screen face internationally. La mala educación
(Bad Education) is the most recent addition to this list of
films that have gained the young actor serious attention from abroad.
These international hits and the other films he has produced for consumption
at home make him one of Spain's great rising stars. Yet Martínez
is loath to abandon his professional roots; he continues to find time
to act in theater performances.

Maura (Spain, b. 1945)
ABOUT THE ACTRESS
Carmen Maura began her career performing in caberet and café

end of the Franco dicatorship in the mid-70s. She gained popularity
as the host of the much-watched TV show "Esta Noche". Her
first successful film appearance came in 1977 with Tigres de papel.
Thereafter, she appeared in television roles, on stage, and in film.
During the 1980s, she worked regularly with director Pedro Almodóvar,
producing such feature films as La ley del deseo (The Law
of Desire) and Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios
(Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). Comedies have

in dramas. She took home the Spanish Goya Award for Best Actress in
1989, 1991, and 2001.

Eduardo
Noriega (Spain, b. 1973)
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Born the youngest of seven brothers, Eduardo Noriega started out studying
music, but soon discovered his natural talent for drama and shifted
the focus of his studies. His major breakthrough came in 1996, when
he teamed up with then-blossoming director Alejandro Amenábar
in Tesis (Thesis). After sweeping the Goya Awards, the
pair gained international attention with their movie of the following
year, Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes). Cameron Crowe
bestowed the best kind of praise upon it when he remade the film in
2001 as Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise in the role originally
formed by the young actor. Noriega has also worked with such noted
directors as Mateo Gil and Guillermo del Toro and has made a name
for himself in Spanish cinema. His talent continues to capture him
strong and diverse leading roles in Spanish feature films.

Benicio
del Toro (Puerto Rico, b. 1967)
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Pennsylvania farm country, Benicio
del Toro was studying to be a lawyer when he took his first college
acting class. Irrevocably bitten by the acting bug, he dropped his
original career plan and began actively studying acting in Los Angeles
and New York. He made television appearances on popular series such
as "Miami Vice" and "Hard Copy" and played small
parts in the 007 film License to Kill and The Indian Runner.
His face became increasingly familiar to audiences over the next few
years.
His real break finally came in 1995 with his memorable role as mumbling
gangster Fred Fenster in The Usual Suspects, a part for which
he took home an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor.
In 2000, he would also take home the Academy Award for Best Supporting
Actor and numerous critics awards for his memorable performance in
Traffic, a role in which nearly all of his spoken lines are
in Spanish. He is the third Puerto Rican actor to ever win an Oscar.
After the successes of 2000, his celebrity status seemed firmly cemented
and he has become a mainstay on the big screen. He appeared on People
Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" and "Most Eligible
Bachelors" lists. Comparisons with James Dean, Marlon Brando,
and Brad Pitt pay witness to both his talent and his smouldering good
looks.
