Pedro Almodóvar
(Spain, b. 1949)
ABOUT PEDRO ALMODOVAR
One of the most acclaimed Spanish film directors internationally.
He is best known for his use of melodrama, improbable circumstances,
and a sophisticated use of kitch. A recurring theme in his work is
the desire to connect with others. This yearning for fulfillment is
often expressed through characters on the intellectual and social
fringes of society; however, all of his films, he claims, have autobiographical
elements.

Alejandro
Amenábar (Chile / Spain, b. 1972)
ABOUT ALEJANDRO
AMENABAR
Born in Chile to a Spanish mother and Chilean father, the family returned
to Spain when Amenábar was just and infant. Though he is young
and has directed only a handful of films, he is considered one of
the most important contemporary Spanish film directors. He dropped
out of film school and produced his first short film at the age of
19. He writes and directs his own films and also has composed film
scores. Both his disinterest in themes that look to Spain's recent
past and his exploration of the surreal and fantastic set him apart
from most other Spanish directors.

Luis
Buñuel (Spain / Mexico, b. 1900-d. 1983)
ABOUT LUIS BUÑUEL
Surrealism leaves its indelible mark across the span of Buñuel's
work. During his university studies in Madrid, he befriended fellow
student artists such as painter Salvador Dalí, poet Federico
García Lorca. He gained experience working as a director's
assistant in Paris before starting to create his own films. After
the Spanish Civil War, he left for the United States, then migrated
to Mexico in 1946 where he spent most of his later life and directed
21 films. In his later years, Buñuel also did film work in
France. Disturbing and surreal images are his trademark. He also never
shied from criticism of traditional institutions and attitudes such
as organized religion and middle class morality. True to his surrealist
roots, Buñuel neither promoted nor explained any of his work.
For this reason, his work remains perplexing and is often misunderstood.
Although Buñuel made several French language films in his later
years, only Spanish language films are listed here:

Julio
Medem (Spain, b. 1958)
ABOUT JULIO MEDEM
As a teenager, Medem made films with his father's Super8 camera. His
fascination with the human mind led him to study psychiatry and he
obtained a degree in medicine in 1985. Thereafter he worked as film
critic, screenwriter, editor, and assistant director on various films.
After winning a few awards for short films, Medem decided to turn
his full attention to filmmaking. Interest in one of his screenplays
(Vacas) by the production company Sogetel led to his first
commercial success. Films that followed won him numerous prizes. His
2003 documentary film La pelota vasca about nationalism and
political conflict in the Basque country of northern Spain was quite
contentious among Castilians. Uproar over the film caused him to leave
his home country to continue his work in France.

Robert
Rodríguez (Texas, USA, b. 1968)
ABOUT ROBERT RODRIGUEZ
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Rodríguez is of Mexican descent,
shoots his films in Texas and Mexico, and often casts Hispanics in
his lead roles. The story behind his first film El Mariachi
sounds like every young budding director's dream. The independent
film was remarkable in many respects: Made on a budget of $7000 in
14 days with amateur actors and no second takes, the film became an
instant favorite at the Sundance Film Festival, and won him a distribution
deal with Columbia Pictures. The strongly independent filmmaker went
on to make two popular follow-up movies to complete the mariachi trilogy,
as well as other Hollywood hits. He has collaborated with the likes
of Quentin Tarentino and Kevin Williamson and wears many hats in the
creation of his own films, including editor, sound editor, production
designer, and visual effects designer. Despite his high-key success,
he remains unconventional in his approach and is still known for putting
out films on relatively low budgets by Hollywood standards.

Carlos
Saura (Spain, b. 1932)
ABOUT CARLOS SAURA
From an artistically talented family, Carlos Saura was an avid photographer
as a teenager and made his first 16mm film at 18. He at first pursued
university studies in industrial engineering, but he gave that up
to enroll at a cinematography school in Madrid. During the years of
Franco's dictatorship, Saura increasingly addressed political themes
shrouded in allegory and symbolism to evade censorship. His flight
from objective reality shows the influence of Buñuelesque surrealism
and the Spanish artistic tradition of esperpento, an absurd
semi-fantastic type of humor. He leaves political themes behind in
his work of the post-Franco era, leading some critics to believe that
his creativity fed off the political situation at the time. Nonetheless,
he has been equally prolific and continues to win awards for his later
work.

Fernando
Trueba (Spain, b. 1955)
ABOUT FERNANDO TRUEBA
Trueba studied philosophy and cinema in Madrid. He worked as a film
critic for various newpapers and journals and founded his own film
magazine Casablanca in 1980, the same year in which he directed
his first feature film (Opera primera). The Spanish director
is known at home for his light comedies and projects that have tested
the boundaries of good taste. Though he made his first English-language
film in 1989 (The Mad Monkey), he first gained international
attention with his Oscar-winning Belle epoque in 1993. He has
also worked as a screenwriter and producer.
