Spanish language music: Mariachi
ABOUT MARIACHI
Mariachi music originated in the Mexican state of Jalisco in the 19th
century. It is played by a group of musicians with a standard minimum
of instruments: at least two violins, two trumpets, one Spanish guitar,
one vihuela (a high-pitched, five-string guitar) and one guitarrón
(a small-scaled acoustic bass). However, a mariachi band sometimes features
more than twenty musicians. Apart from their distinctive sound, mariachi
bands are also known for their ornate costumes.

Jorge
Negrete (Mexico / USA)
CD 15 exitos inmortales de Jorge
Negrete [1992] LISTEN
BUY
CD REVIEW: He was Mexico's first and perhaps biggest charro
cantor (singing cowboy), and he played his role to the hilt. In dozens
of movies, Jorge Negrete played the big romantic hero, and with his
operatic vocal training, he interpreted the Mexican folk songs with
an inspired reading and made them unforgettable hits. Among them, and
included here, are "Juan Charrasqueado," "El Hijo del
Pueblo," and "Ay Jalisco No Te Rajes," the title track
from the popular movie of the same name, the film that first put Negrete
on the map. Other tunes on this CD became Negrete signature songs--"Yo
Soy Mexicano," on pride and patriotism; "Amor con Amor Se
Paga," on the give-and-take in romance; and "Mexico Lindo,"
whose sad lyrics of dying on foreign soil became prophetic for Negrete
when he died in a Los Angeles hospital in December 1953. -- Review

Pedro
Infante (Mexico)
CD Románticas
de Pedro Infante [1996] LISTEN
BUY
CD REVIEW: Jorge Negrete may have been Mexico's first cinematic
ranchera hero, but perhaps because of his premature death in 1953, Pedro
Infante surpassed him in the number of hit movies and recordings. And
like that of Negrete, Infante's fantastic recording output has been
constantly released in new compilations. This collection has most of
his signature hits, including "Cien Años," a heartbreak
tune about being abandoned, and "Paloma Querida," an old standard
reinvented by Infante when he sings with cool detachment about love's
inspiration. Infante was untrained, his approach was simple but emotive,
yet he was talented enough to make unforgettable such other classics
as Agustin Lara's "Mujer" and "Amor de Mis Amores,"
and the uplifting bolero "Amor a la Distancia." Infante died
in a plane crash in 1957 but is immortalized in his movies and music.

Javier
Solís (Mexico)
CD La historia
de Javier Solís [1992] LISTEN

CD REVIEW: Many fine singers have come close, but Javier
Solis is still regarded by many as the best bolero ranchera singer Mexico
has ever produced. Since his death in 1966, there have been dozens of
hit compilations. Luckily, this collection contains most of Solis's
biggest hits: "Payaso," "Cenizas," "Sombras,"
"Media Vuelta," "Lloraras, Lloraras," and "Si
Dios Me Quita la Vida." And while Solis got most of the credit,
it's important to remember he worked with topflight producers, studio
musicians, and, most critical of all, excellent song material from Rafael
Ramirez ("Lloraras, Lloraras"), Luis Demetrio ("Si Dios
Me Quita la Vida"), and Jose Alfredo Jimenez ("Media Vuelta").
But the combined power of vivid tearjerker songs enveloped in gorgeous
mariachi arrangements is nothing without Solis's exquisite vocals and
tough but compassionate stance. -- Review by Ramiro Burr
